It's double trouble when TCM airs "Dead Ringer" tonite at 8 pm/ET & "A Stolen Life" at 1:30 am/ET. Bette Davis plays twins in both, in conflict over a man.  '64's "Ringer" is Bette in her post-"Baby Jane" phase, as a rich rotten sister & the poor sister who plots revenge. Great fun & mature cast!  '46's "A Stolen Life" was one of Bette's biggest hits at WB. In this romance, there's a selfish sister & a low-key sister. Young Glenn Ford is the man who attracts both sibs. This is a romantic soap, in "The Great Lie" vein. My look at all these sisters here:

And the women? Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock, Jennifer Aniston — allergic to risk. No hag horror. No psychological decay. No dangerous glamour. Just Botox and bland prestige roles about wine moms, CEOs, or therapists.

Meanwhile, younger actors — Kristen Stewart, Mia Goth, Paul Mescal, Barry Keoghan — are doing what Gen X wouldn’t. They’re letting themselves be ugly, strange, and specific. They’re already giving us what Gen X never did: character work.

Demi Moore made her Baby Jane. The rest of her generation still thinks they’re in My Best Friend’s Wedding.

Barbara Stanwyck is superb as the hypochondriac heiress who overhears a plot for murder in 1948's suspense film noir, "Sorry, Wrong Number." Based on Lucille Fletcher's classic radio play, who also expanded the tale to film length. Stanwyck makes the spoiled, neurotic character empathetic & the gradual descent into terror most believable. Burt Lancaster is solid as the shady husband, Ed Begley perfect as her big daddy, & Wendell Corey as her doc. But it's Barbara's show all the way, with a terrific production. My take:

James Stewart became a top leading man in Frank Capra's 1939 political comedy-drama "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington." Jimmy was perfect for the role of Jefferson Smith, an idealistic guy who becomes a senator, and has to face the wolves of Washington, DC! Sentimental, for sure. Still a powerful film with a timely message, an incredible cast, especially Stewart, who shines. My look here at "Mr. Smith":

Stephen King and director Jack Bender have joined forces again for a new TV thriller "The Institute". Based on King’s best-selling 2019 novel by the same name, Bender said after working together on shows such as crime drama "Mr Mercedes" and sci-fi show "Under the Dome" they were keen to find a new project.

The Institute tells the story of Luke Ellis, a boy who is abducted and wakes up in a mysterious facility called The Institute, where other children with special abilities are held. The series will star Ben Barnes and Mary-Louise Parker, with Joe Freeman as Luke Ellis. "It's a sort of… a slow simmering sort of horrifying thriller rather than a horror," Barnes said.

While the first series covers the book, there are plans to continue. Trailer posted at R1.

Actor Debra Messing wrote an Islamophobic comment on her Instagram in reference to New York City Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, claiming that he “celebrated” 9/11.

“I have nothing against Socialism, don’t know where you got that,” Messing, who is known for her role in the sitcom “Will & Grace,” wrote in an Instagram comment replying to a user who called her out for sharing a reel denouncing socialism. “I voted against M because he celebrated 9/11. Let that sink in. I love my country. My reasoning is not Islamophobia. I’ve chosen to live in the most beautifully diverse city in the world. The same people who did 9/11 did Oct. 7. I just don’t want a mayor who sides with terrorists. Oh and he wants to defund the police. And he has no experience. I’ll stop here.”

If elected in November, Mamdani, a democratic socialist and state assemblyman who was born and raised in Uganda before moving to New York City at age 7, would become New York City’s first Muslim mayor. Since his primary win Tuesday, he has faced an influx of Islamophobic threats on social media — some from far-right figures, like Laura Loomer, who wrote on social media that because of his win, New York will face another 9/11.

Messing’s claim that Mamdani, who was 9 years old in September 2001, “celebrated” 9/11 and sides with terrorists seemingly comes from a rap song he wrote in 2017, in which he praised the now-defunct Islamic charity Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development. The five leaders of the group were convicted in 2009 of “providing material support to Hamas,” which the U.S. recognizes as a foreign terrorist organization. A number of human rights organizations in 2022 called for the pardon of the five leaders on the basis that money went to social programs run by Palestinian charities and did not directly fund Hamas.

Mamdani has been critical of Israel’s government, accusing it of committing a genocide in Gaza. His criticism of Israel has led some to call him antisemitic.

“I’ve said at every opportunity that there is no room for antisemitism in this city, in this country,” Mamdani, who also said it “pains” him to be “called an antisemite,” said last week. “I’ve said that because that is something I personally believe.”

Representatives for Messing and Mamdani did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, who is Jewish and ran against Mamdani for Democratic candidate for New York City mayor, wrote on social media that threats against Mamdani are “morally reprehensible.”

Jim Farley, the CEO of Ford, said on Friday that the Chinese EV industry posed a serious threat to the American automaker.

An alleged attack in Provincetown, Massachusetts, early Monday is being investigated as a possible hate crime, with police releasing new details Tuesday morning as they called on the public for help.

Provincetown police said the victim reported that three men got out of a vehicle and attacked him on the east end of Bradford Street between 1 and 2 a.m. The person didn’t need hospitalization after being evaluated by paramedics Monday afternoon.

The victim described the car as a black Lexus sedan, and described the attackers as three men ages 20 to 30. They also reported that the suspects used a homophobic slur during the attack.

Police are asking the public to review any security or doorbell cameras in the area of Howland Street between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. for anything that could be linked to the attack.

“The Provincetown Police Department is taking this report very seriously and has detectives actively investigating the incident,” police said in a statement, adding that everyone in the department was “alerted to this incident and will continue working hard to stay vigilant and keep everyone safe.”

"I've made the difficult decision to step away from my creative involvement in The Last of Us on HBO," Druckmann said in a statement. "With work completed on season 2 and before any meaningful work starts on season 3, now is the right time for me to transition my complete focus to Naughty Dog and its future projects, including writing and directing our exciting next game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, along with my responsibilities as Studio Head and Head of Creative."

The statement continued, "Co-creating the show has been a career highlight. It's been an honor to work alongside Craig Mazin to executive produce, direct, and write on the last two seasons. Writing this Op-Ed for World AIDS Day

I believe that televised awards shows are not a forum for expressing personal religious, social or political views. However, I have not objected when fellow performers have worn red ribbon to express their support for AIDS research; that's their choice. My choice is NOT to wear a ribbon.

Soap Opera Digest readers should know wearing a red ribbon is no longer entirely voluntary. Those who began by offering ribbons to performers now resort to extreme tactics in pursuit of their express goal of 100 percent conformity. When performers arrive at an award show, individuals who attempt to pin ribbons on them accost them. A performer who declines may be accosted at the pre-show reception, again while waiting backstage and again at the press conference after the show.

Offering these ribbons to celebrities was, in my view, a benign and pro-social act. On the other hand, aggressively badgering performers to compel the wearing of ribbons is not only demeaning to AIDS victims and to the desperate need for an all-out research war against the disease, but an offense against personal freedom.

By attempting to force 100 percent conformity, these activists are now attempting to make the red ribbon a visible litmus test for separating those individuals who empathize with AIDS victims and support AIDS research from those who do not. This is a misguided and dangerous notion.

First, it misguidedly politicizes human tragedy. These red ribbons provide a means by which public figures can appear to make a 'politically correct' statement in favor of a cause they do not support.

Second, any attempt to force conformity to a single social agenda attacks the freedom of expression. The extreme activities that resort to harassment to compel actors and actresses to wear these ribbons are practicing a '90s brand of McCarthyism – and their behavior is deplorable. Our community was devastated by political extremists in the 1950s and again became a target during the last presidential campaign. It surpasses belief that men and women in the entertainment field would resort to shameful practices that the enemies of artistic freedom have used against us.

Sadly, it falls to some of us who ardently support AIDS victims and AIDS research to resist these tactics by personal example. Believe me, the easy way out would be to pin the ribbon on and keep silent. But I won't, because I don't want these appalling tactics to succeed.

So many folks die from a combination of bad luck and bad decisions.

Rozentals says he was suspended from his funded training programme because he makes what have been described as "edgy videos"

Kurt Adams Rozentals, a canoeist who has been training to compete on behalf of Great Britain at the 2028 Olympic Games in canoe slalom, says that his hopes have been dashed thanks to him launching an OnlyFans account.

The 22 year old athlete had previously been part of Paddle UK’s funded training programme for Olympic hopefuls until he was suspended in April.

The organisation have referred to the suspension as an “interim action” which is designed to “safeguard other athletes, staff, and volunteers due to the nature of the allegation”. It has not made clear exactly what the “allegation” against Rozentals is, however its disciplinary policy list does include “offensive use of social media and indecent, offensive or immoral behaviour” as examples of gross misconduct.

The canoeist has said that he only started in the account on January of this year in order to cover the costs of his training, as the £16,000 he received a year on the programme was not enough to pay for his needs.

The answer surprised me because I was looking at a different work by a different artist in the Uffizi Gallery. Asked the bot for a picture of the Sargent work it had so fully described. After a longish pause it gave a tiny, fuzzy image.

I pressed for something clearer. It instead tried to change the subject by showing me other Sargent works.

When I again insisted on a better image of its initially described painting, it finally produced a somewhat clearer copy of the piece. The described people were barely visible brushstrokes. AND, the now visible name of the piece was Not the name I’d originally asked it to examine.

Further questioning was useless. It kept trying to deflect me to other works by Sargent and different artists.

SO, it obviously had made up what it initially told me. And it was determined to hide the fact that it had lied.

Department leadership is directing its attorneys to prioritize denaturalization in cases involving naturalized citizens who commit certain crimes — and giving district attorneys wider discretion on when to pursue this tactic, according to a June 11 memo published online. The move is aimed at U.S. citizens who were not born in the country; according to data from 2023, close to 25 million immigrants were naturalized citizens.

At least one person has already been denaturalized in recent weeks. On June 13, a judge ordered the revocation of the citizenship of Elliott Duke, who uses they/them pronouns. Duke is an American military veteran originally from the U.K. who was convicted for distributing child sexual abuse material — something they later admitted they were doing prior to becoming a U.S. citizen.

Evangelical pastor Rev. Jimmy Swaggart is in critical condition in a local hospital after he went into cardiac arrest Sunday morning in his Baton Rouge area home, Jimmy Swaggart Ministries said in a news release.

According to family members, Swaggart went into cardiac arrest shortly after 8 a.m. Emergency personnel who responded were able to revive his heartbeat before transporting him to the hospital, the church said.

"He remains in the ICU, where he is under close medical care," Jimmy Swaggart Ministries said.

The Senate Republican tax bill speeding to passage includes the biggest reduction of funding for the federal safety net since at least the 1990s, targeting more than $1 trillion in social spending.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — The eldest son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit has been arrested again, this time on suspicion of rape, police said Tuesday.

Marius Borg Høiby is the stepson of the heir to the Norwegian throne, Crown Prince Haakon, and the son of Mette-Marit from a previous relationship. He has no royal title or official duties.

Borg Høiby was arrested late Monday in Oslo on a preliminary charge of having had “sexual intercourse with someone who is unconscious or for other reasons unable to resist the act.” A preliminary charge comes before a formal charge and allows authorities to detain suspects during an investigation.

Police did not say when the alleged rape occurred, but only that “the victim must have been unable to resist the act.” Norwegian media said Borg Høiby denied the accusation.

Hege Salomon, the lawyer for the woman who was allegedly raped, said “she is having a hard time.” She told Norwegian broadcaster NRK that police, not the woman, had brought the case. The woman was not identified.

The royal palace had no comment, the news agency NTB said.

On Aug. 4, police officers responded to a disturbance in downtown Oslo and briefly detained Borg Høiby. He faced preliminary charges of bodily harm and criminal damage and was released. Details were unclear but police said there was “a relationship between the suspect and the victim.”

More preliminary charges have since been filed against Borg Høiby, including violating several restraining orders and driving without a valid driver’s license. In all, the cases involve four women and one man.

The case was top news in Norway, where the royals are popular.

The Reagan-appointed judge ordered the NIH to restore funds for research related to racial minorities and LGBTQ+ people.

A federal judge appointed by Ronald Reagan on Monday accused the Trump administration of “appalling” and “palpably clear” discrimination against racial minorities and LGBTQ+ Americans.

“I’ve never seen a record where racial discrimination was so palpable. I’ve sat on this bench now for 40 years. I’ve never seen government racial discrimination like this,” said U.S. District Judge William Young, a Massachusetts-based jurist who took the bench in 1985. Young’s sweeping rebuke during a court hearing was a reference to two executive orders signed by President Donald Trump that led the National Institutes of Health to rescind funding for research related to racial minorities and LGBTQ+ people. Though Young said he was uncertain whether he had the power to block the executive orders themselves, he declared the NIH cuts Monday to be “illegal” and “void,” and he ordered the NIH to immediately restore the research funds. An appeal is likely. “I am hesitant to draw this conclusion — but I have an unflinching obligation to draw it — that this represents racial discrimination and discrimination against America’s LGBTQ community,” the judge said. “That’s what this is. I would be blind not to call it out. My duty is to call it out.“ Young’s commentary was an extraordinary departure for a federal judge of any era even at a moment when Trump’s policies have been facing stiff resistance in the courts.

About 2-1/2 hours ago I went out to the front yard to call my three indoor/outdoor cats in for dinner. I called names, and thought I saw my black cat running from across the street, but when I opened the gate in rushed a black puppy instead, his ENTIRE body one big wag. My neighbor's fiance was doing yard work across the street at her house. He saw me and was spitting nails, saying "These two guys just pulled up in front of me, opened the door and THREW that puppy out, looking dead in my face and smirking the whole time!"

I scooped Puppy up, and he immediately snuggled into my neck. Took him inside to a spare room, sat on a sofa with him on my lap. Suuuucch a good little one. Three of the cats are curious-to-indifferent; one just stalks off when Puppy approaches; the last is LIVID.

My question: is it okay to put Pup on the front porch for the night? I don't want nighttime animal drama, plus I don't know Pup's health status. I have several cat beds s/he'd fit, and while I don't have dog food, I have plenty of high-quality cat kibble Pup already seems to love. Of course I have water bowls. Pup would be 1000% safe as long as s/he stays inside the yard, inside the fence line.

Unhumans is both a manifesto and a guide for action. The countries say they are "speaking and acting as one to champion the rights of LGBTQI people"

Foreign ministries from Canada, Australia, Brazil, Columbia and several European countries including Spain, Belgium and Ireland, issued a joint statement in support of LGBTQIA+ rights on Saturday (June 28).

The United States was notably absent from the letter, which was released on International Pride Day.

Attitude has approached the Foreign Office for clarity over the UK’s absence from the letter, but it is worth noting that many key Pride events take place after June, including Pride In London due on 4 July and Brighton Pride from 2-3 August.

The statement condemned violence, criminalisation, stigmatisation and discrimination against LGBTQI+ people, calling them clear violations of human rights.

Jesko’s feature — produced by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard’s Imagine Documentaries and ABC News Studios — is the first in-depth look into Walters’ storied career. The film also serves as a sweeping historical review of the decades-long dominance of network news that made figures such as Walters a gatekeeper of the culture, as Jesko describes her.

Before the advent of social media and podcasts that allowed celebrities to control their messages, going through the X-ray machine of a Barbara Walters interview delivered exposure on a massive scale. David Sloan, a longtime ABC News producer who worked with Walters, recalls how the screen images of her specials flickered through the windows of Manhattan apartment towers.

“Tell Me Everything” came together not long after Walters died at the age of 93 in 2022. Sara Bernstein, president of Imagine Documentaries, approached Betsy West, executive producer and co-director of the Julia Child documentary “Julia,” about taking on a Walters project. Sloan, who oversaw an Emmy-winning tribute after Walters’ death, also wanted a deeper exploration into the impact of her career. West, also a former Walters colleague, and Sloan became executive producers on the film. “Tell Me Everything” taps deeply into the ABC News archives, which contain thousands of hours of interviews Walters conducted over her 40 years at the network.

I’ve been ignored my whole life—from grade school all the way through to adulthood.

I’m the one kid in the class who didn’t get a valentine card from any other kid in school. The teacher would quickly write one so I’d get at least one. Wow, that still saddens me.

It’s never gotten better. People even ignore me when I’m right in front of them (oh, the stories I can tell).

I assumed it was the wall I put up when I was in the closet so no one would discover my sexuality.

When I came out of the closet, however, nothing got better. Gay guys ignore me too.

I’ve wracked my brain trying to figure out why. Was it my looks? My attitude? Maybe I smell weird. Maybe I’m just exceedingly average. The ignoring does seem to occur in diverse situations so it’s something I’m doing or some vibe I’m giving out.

I tried dressing better, hanging out in gay spaces. It’s not like I’m a quiet, introvert—I’m a fun, extrovert (I think). While I have friends, I usually have to be the one who has to arrange and call to get together with friends.

I’ve coped by aiming for excellence at work (so colleagues are forced to see me) and being as kind as I can be to others because I’ve experienced how unkind people make me feel.

I am happy that, as I’m getting older (now, in my late 30’s), I’m caring less and less. Every now and again, I get thrown right back into it.

Today, I walked around in Manhattan. It’s Pride Month and there are gays everywhere. I didn’t even get one acknowledgment that I existed. Lots of people glancing and then looking away.

...end stage dementia. A recent UTI took all of the fight out of her. She is now in hospice care. Can't drink or eat unless they put a sponge in her mouth.

She's been in a nursing home since 2018. I always knew that this day was coming but became complacent with the holding pattern she was in. Now the hospice nurse has given her a month at most. Went to a showing last night with decent expectations but was thoroughly impressed by the film which repeatedly surprised me by going places I never expecting the movie- or any zombie-derivative genre movie- to go.

The acting was fantastic, the cinematography gorgeous and the story telling fresh and unpredictable. Great moments of tension anchored by an extremely strong emotional core that at moments felt like Spielberg at his absolute best. I cried at the end.

And there’s also hot zombies with massive flopping semi erect dicks too

Is this like Euphoria where it’s a “teen” show but actually for adults or is it like Dawson’s Creek where it’s a legitimate teen show but with tons of sex and nudity?

I’ve watched many shows from Spain and most of them don’t have this much random sex scenes.

Hot though.

Frank Lorenzo on “All in the Family”. I was on Archie’s side here. Frank was annoying, not funny, and his habit of loudly singing to the neighborhood was not charming.

Plus, he was a total closet case. The Lorenzo’s were supposed to show role reversal in the genders but it was clunky and didactic in execution. Thank goodness Frank vanished so quickly.

The remarks came in the case of Sylvia Constance, 74, who had brought claims of unfair dismissal, direct race and age discrimination and victimisation against Harpenden Mencap, a charity that provides support to adults with learning disabilities.

Constance, who the tribunal heard is black British, said she was targeted because of her race, having been dismissed on 13 June 2023 because of an “irrevocable breakdown in the relationship” with Mencap.

Bosses had previously suspended Constance over claims of “emotional/psychological abuse of a tenant in your care” and “bullying and intimidation of colleagues”, the tribunal heard.

Christine Yates, who represented Constance at the tribunal, said in a document: “The respondents have acted like the stereotypical ‘Karen’, having weaponised their privilege and more powerful position against the complainant, making up and suspending the complainant for numerous fictitious infringements, and deflecting from their personal misconduct.

“As egregiously, they encouraged residents under their care to do same. There is also something very sordid about the way in which white, female management have facilitated racism by colluding with white, male residents to give a misogynistic, racist view of the black complainant.”

But Alliott said: “We note Christine Yates uses the slang term ‘Karen’, which is a pejorative and borderline racist, sexist and ageist term.”

The judge dismissed Constance’s claims, saying that the complaints against her were “legitimate” and “did not constitute a targeted racist campaign against her”.

Millions of people will gather on Sunday for the New York City Pride March, packing the streets of Manhattan for a celebration amid the most hostile political environment for L.G.B.T.Q. Americans in decades.

The march commemorates the 1969 Stonewall riots, which are widely seen as giving rise to the modern L.G.B.T.Q. rights movement. That effort, over many years, has increased public support for L.G.B.T.Q. people, but the movement has begun to falter badly in the face of opposition from the Supreme Court, the Trump administration and even some Democrats.

Pride celebrations have always been equal parts party and protest, and those who planned to march on Sunday said that filling the streets with rainbow flags and colorful floats was now more important than ever as the rights of L.G.B.T.Q. people come under increasing attack.

The chaotic scene that broke out Thursday at the Miami-Dade commission meeting should concern everyone who still believes in open government.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch on Saturday doubled down in her criticism of the Pride March organizer’s decision to ban the NYPD’s Gay Officers Action League from participating in the annual event in New York City.

In a strongly worded letter to the event’s organizer, Heritage of Pride, calling the group hypocrites, Tisch demanded that it change its stance on the officers’ exclusion from the celebratory procession. The top cop slammed the new reason given for not letting the gay officers march — namely, that it would violate the event’s no-weapons policy — calling it a “PR stunt” and “Not a solution.”

“It is also the height of hypocrisy to request the security and protection of thousands of armed, uniformed police officers for The March on Sunday and then ban from that event the very officers that proudly represent your community,” Tisch said in the letter.

“In a year when LGBTQ+ rights are under siege in ways we had thought were behind us, this is the time to stand together, not to splinter,” Tisch added. “In that light, I urge you to reconsider your decision here. Regardless of the ultimate outcome.” Heritage of Pride, about two weeks ago, informed the NYPD, including the Gay Officers Action League, or GOAL, that it was continuing its ban for the fourth straight year against allowing police officers to march.

“Though the NYPD remains a partner in monitoring and addressing security threats, the NYPD response is to be called upon only when absolutely necessary,” an internal memo from Heritage of Pride states. “Additionally, the guidelines for our March were updated to clarify that no participating contingent could march with weapons.” Tisch on Friday said she was shocked by the decision, given earlier dialogue she and Det. Four students at the Legacy Traditional School in Surprise, Arizona, were accused of planning to fatally stab a fellow fifth grade student and forge a suicide note to make it appear self-inflicted, according to the police report. A parent alerted the school of the plot on Oct. 1, 2024, after their child overheard the group talking about it.

The students and their parents were instructed to come back to the school the following morning for the school's investigation, per the report.

One of the students interviewed said she had walked over while the group was discussing the plot and made jokes about it, according to the report. But the girl insisted that she was joking while the other students "started to get serious" and she began to back off as a result, the report said.

Animal rescue activist and YouTube star Mikayla Raines has died by suicide, according to her husband. She was 29.

Ethan Raines announced her death in an emotional video he posted to her YouTube channel on Monday.

He said that for years his wife suffered from various mental health issues and struggled to cope with online criticism.

"She couldn’t bear what she was feeling any longer, and she ended her life," he said. "And it breaks my heart that someone who is selfless and devoted her life to animals could have so much negativity pointed at her."

"And to those of you that pushed her to this, every one of you that had been responsible for making her feel this way, I wish you had to feel what she felt," he added. "I wish you had to feel what I feel."

Mikayla Raines created an animal rescue nonprofit, SaveAFox Rescue, in 2017, when she was just 20 years old. The organization, which is based in Lakeville, Minnesota, is dedicated to rescuing foxes from fur farms and providing them with "forever homes."
